This week, Emily Rathbone shares her tips and tricks to navigating fashion whilst working at home.
Picture this, it’s 11am and you’ve just resurfaced. You had planned to go for a run at 8am, attend a lecture at 9am and make a start on your deadline at 10am but it's too late now you might as well hang about for another hour or so… sound familiar, huh? We get it, the option to stay in your PJs all day is a tempting notion, but a change as small as pulling on a clean outfit might just be the adjustment you need to get into a productive mindset. We’ve chatted with a few Leeds Uni locals to find the best at-home styling tips and motivation tricks for twenty-something year olds to stay productive when working from home.
Monday Madness
The start of a new week can be daunting, but facing the week head-on and dressing a little more put-together on a Monday can project you into the right frame of mind. We’re thinking trousers and a nice top is the right combo.

Interview Attire
Let’s face it, interviewing in a pandemic feels anything but natural, but dressing as if you were going to a ‘normal’ interview is a great way of getting yourself in the right mindset. Find yourself a smart outfit (don’t forget the shoes) and try to wear a colour that is different to your wall or background shade to help you stand out.

Heavy Zoom-call Day
If your diary’s looking pretty packed with calls, keep it comfy on the bottom and chic on top (life’s about balance…). Look for some wide leg trousers or leggings, and pair it with a smart-casual top or sweater.

Deadline Focus
Need to buckle down and get on with the essay that you’ve been avoiding? To minimise distractions, keep your clothes loose and comfy. Hop on the bandwagon and get yourself a matching sweats and hoodie set.

Studying with a Friend
Now we’re allowed to meet our friends for a takeaway coffee, it might be a good time to trade in the pyjamas for a laid-back, cute but comfy outfit (think jeans and hoodie or sweats and a fun jumper).

Workout After Work
If you’re looking to squeeze a workout in later in the day, get part of your workout gear on in the morning. Pop on your gym leggings when you get up and you’ve already conquered one hurdle for when it comes to working out later on.

Tips to Stay Motivated
Navigating the right outfit is the first step in starting your productive routine from a home environment, but we’ve collected are a few more healthy habits to keep you going.
Take breaks at regular intervals - try and get some fresh air even if it means sticking your head out the window!
Stay hydrated and avoid ‘heavy’ lunchtime meals - keep sipping away and try to opt for a lighter lunch.
Have a dedicated study space - ideally a desk or table under some natural light. This could be a really helpful idea if you often find yourself slumped in your bed and in need of a routine.
Listen to the radio or play some soft/low-fi background music. Here’s some recommendations that have been shared with us:

Maintain a tidy room - think of the tidy space = tidy mind complex.
Have something to look forward to at the end of a study session (whether it’s a Deliveroo, seeing a friend or having a chill night in).
Finally, set goals for the day and keep a to-do list. Even if they’re small, it will give you a sense of accomplishment to tick them off.
We hope these tips set you in good stead to master your at-home wardrobe and offer you some guidance navigating these last few months working from home.
Love,
LRFS x
