Meet our 2021 Charities! (Part 2)

Carers Leeds

Our second incredible charity we have decided to partner with this year is Carers Leeds. Carers Leeds was established in 1996 and since then has been committed to providing support for unpaid carers in Leeds. This charity has a special place in our heart due to being so close to home; they are based in Leeds City Centre on the Headrow.

They define a carer as an individual who provides support to another who could not manage without this extra help. This could be to a friend, family member or neighbour and the help could be necessary due to a range of factors including physical or mental disability, age or substance misuse. This charity is still providing support in these uncertain times and provides positivity and connection through their social media, encouraging people to reach out to them if they are a carer and feel like they could be receiving help.

Carers Leeds provides support for carers in a variety of ways. Firstly, they provide an advice line where individuals can call to receive support on a number of topics including financial advice, their own well-being as well as help sourcing equipment they may need to perform their care. As well as this, the charity promotes that everyone is entitled to a carers assessment. This will enable the carer to discuss their circumstances and gain help and advice from the facility.

The service provides both one-on-one confidential support and group support sessions. Carers Leeds believes that a group network of carers in similar circumstances is very beneficial as it connects like-minded individuals and allows them to share experiences with those who understand their situation. Within the groups, the charity hosts activities and speakers in order to support the members in whatever way they can.

The facility also provides training to carers on a variety of care related topics. This includes a four-session course on Caring Well, which involves teaching carers how to look after themselves, their finances as well as managing any issues that may arise in a caring based role. Some more serious issues they discuss include emergencies, medical aid and power of attorney appointment.

Due to the crazy world we live in right now we are even more passionate about supporting independent charities like these, and are so proud to announce we are working with them this year.

Thanks for reading!
