Sustainability Saturdays: Online Second-hand Retailers

Hello again! Welcome back to Leeds RAG, we hope to start this year better than ever. We hope you had a lovely New Year, regardless of whether you spent it drinking a little too much at home with family, having a film marathon or indulging in a takeaway. After the vast majority of us had our hopes of partying with our pals taken away from us by the dreaded tier system and the pandemic that just won’t budge- let’s face it; we all deserved some kind of celebration to draw this crazy year to a close. Lets manifest better things for 2021.

We thought we would kick off Sustainability Saturdays this year with something short and sweet; a low down on some online second-hand stores for you to spend your Christmas money on….

1. WeAreCow

WeAreCow is one of the coolest online second-hand retailers I’ve ever seen, with edgy graphics and bespoke reworked designer pieces it truly is the perfect place to purchase all your edgy Leeds garms. They pride themselves on their unique pieces and big brand names sold in a way which does not cause additional environmental strain. They also provide the perfect option for gifts with virtual vouchers ranging from £5 to £50. So, if you have family or friends you have forgotten to buy for.....(don’t worry me too), here’s your answer!

2. Depop

I am sure you’ve heard of Depop, the student bible to second-hand, affordable fashion. We love Depop for its sustainable alternative to buying new, the chance to find unique gems, as well as to support independent businesses that promote and sell their products on this platform. It is super easy for anyone to sell on Depop too; they just take 10% commission for using their site and leave you to the rest! If you are looking to make some extra cash this year, maybe to make up for the takeaways you'll be craving in lockdown... defo check this out! The app is very simple to use; it almost resembles Instagram so it is the perfect way to pass some time and browse through the listings to see if anything takes your fancy.

3. EBay

Ebay is a global online marketplace where you can find just about anything; from electronics, to fashion, even to furniture! The items are super affordable, which is great for us students- you even have an option of sending sellers an offer to try and get a better deal. Ebay allows sellers to set up auctions so you can find some great steals at even better prices than they are listed for! It is such an adrenaline rush entering a bidding war for an item at a fraction of the cost- your competitive side will be sure to show itself....

You know here at Leeds RAG we love to support independent businesses; Ebay makes it easy to do this through their new feature called eBay for Business Awards, an area of the platform where you can shop small, independent or family run business which sell on Ebay.

4. Thrift+

Thrift+ defines themselves as a social venture, bringing charity shops online to make second-hand choices accessible to all. Their vision is to bring charity shops up to the same level as Amazon and ASOS, so it is easy to choose this sustainable option. It stocks high-street brands such as Adidas, COS, Ralph Lauren and & Other Stories as well as luxury labels like Prada and Kenzo, making it the one stop destination for ALL your second hand fashion needs!

5. Beyond Retro

They also offer 10% student discount... what more could you want! They showcase an electric mix of the best hand-picked vintage items from all over the world! Beyond Retro even has their own collection, LABEL, which includes clothes that they have reworked. These one off items are sure to make you the envy of your friends and show just how cool second-hand fashion can be...
