Circular fashion is the phrase du jour making the rounds in the fashion media at the moment. But, it's more than just the latest buzzword; it's a not-so-new approach to fashion that we could all adopt to help the planet without having to compromise on style or quality.
What is circular fashion?
Circular fashion is an ethos that seeks to reimagine our concept of buying fashion. Each stage in a garment's life cycle is considered so that it retains utility and function all the way throughout. Usually made from upcycled or recycled fabrics, a piece of clothing is made so that it can be constantly remade once it loses its current form. One great example of circular fashion that we love at LRFS is the work of MUD Jeans.
How can we engage with circular fashion?
Circular fashion is something we can all follow in such small ways that we might not even realise that we're taking part in it. Just turning an old pair of jeans into shorts, or transforming a shirt destined for the trash into a dress is part of the circular fashion philosophy. Really, the aim is as simple as reducing the amount of new resources we introduce into fashion circulation, opting instead to get creative with what is already available to us.
This includes simply cutting down on the amount we shop in the first instance, as well as buying second-hand and vintage rather than opting for fast fashion brands, or even organising a clothes-swap with friends. I know that my wardrobe would be much happier if I could just fill it with my pals' clothes instead...
If you're planning on purchasing from a circular fashion brand, you can be sure that you're not only getting a high quality garment, but also taking part in fashion's most exciting inner-circle.
