For 2021, Leeds RAG Fashion Show is absolutely committed to sustainable fashion - as if we weren't already up against enough of a challenge! We don't believe that sustainability should be a challenge, though, but a given. So, this post marks the first in our series of 'Sustainability Saturdays' where we're hoping to not only share our vision with you, but loads of info, advice, and tips on how we can all live more sustainably.
What is sustainability?
Sustainability covers four major areas in our life: the ecological, the economic, the cultural, and the social. Being wholly sustainable feels like a mammoth task for modern businesses, no thanks to the exploitative processes that, until recently, were the norm in pretty much every industry. However, LRFS21 are here to explain the basics of sustainability and how, when you break it down, it can be achieved.
How can you become sustainable?
Being ecologically sustainable entails working and producing in such a way that doesn't impact upon climate change or harm the environment, be that natural resources or eco-systems such as soil and water.
Economic sustainability is important for the running of the business itself, ensuring that the business is still able to turnover a profit whilst committing to a long-term, healthy attitude towards its consumption and employees.
Cultural sustainability is key for the preservation of traditions and beliefs within communities. Sustainability has to have a place for culture if it is to be kept alive as the world continues to evolve.
In order to be socially sustainable, the welfare and wellbeing of workers must be of paramount concern. This means paying employees a stable living wage, providing them with basic human necessities and a safe working environment. The ethos of social sustainability also extends to an enterprise's customers and affected communities, recognising the vitality of human relationships.
Why is it important to be sustainable?
As we head into 2021, the climate crisis is getting worse. Climate change has transformed from the whispers of a conspiracy theory to a full-blown epidemic within the last 50 years. If we don't decide to act now, it will only get worse. More and more individuals and businesses are switching to sustainable production and consumption because of the reality our planet faces.
As if that wasn't convincing enough, we find ourselves still living in a world of injustice, from sweatshop conditions to modern slavery. With the world becoming more accessible each day, it's important that we use all the knowledge at our fingertips as a catalyst for change. We're 21 years into the 21st century: it's time to embrace sustainability as the new normal.
